Ubuntu Heaven

So this weekend wasn’t quite as productive as I’d hoped in terms of my foray into testing and documentation for OpenSUSE. Between a wedding in New Hampshire and a shed that needed building (don’t believe the salespeople - an afternoon project this is not, especially when your best helper is a five-year old), I didn’t make much progress on that front.

The Linux Foundation last week announced the free availability of the Linux Standard Base Driver Development Kit for print drivers. The DDK provides the tools and resources for printing manufacturers to easily support all Linux distributions with one driver package, greatly reducing the time and effort needed to support Linux, a foundation spokesperson said.

I've been aware of the existence of the Linux operating system for a long time, but I'd always assumed that it would be too complicated for me to learn and was a bit too geeky. Recently, however, I began hearing about a version of Linux called Ubuntu that was supposed to be pretty easy to use. Flash forward a few weeks and not only have I found that it is relatively easy to use, but it's already replaced Windows Vista as my main operating system of choice for day to day use!

Deep within the pages of the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 alpha pages are various hints about what’s to expect from the upcoming releases. I have always been a huge fan of having two monitors running from the same PC, it greatly increases productivity. The Ubuntu team is working on integrating a better UI for multiple monitor support, and I personally am very thankful for it.

Linspire Inc. tomorrow will announce an agreement to license instant messaging and digital media technology from Microsoft for use in its Linspire Linux distribution. Additionally, the deal includes protection for Linspire customers against possible violations of Microsoft patents by Linux, and other cooperative measures.

I have so much to thank Bill Gates for: introducing me to the baffling joys of consumer computing with Windows 95; teaching me the meaning of fear and dread with Windows 98; leading me to the sunlit uplands of Windows XP; getting me out of Microsoft altogether with the arrival of Vista. I hardly know where to start. And if I hadn't flown into a high-minded anti-Microsoft, down-with-Bill-Gates fury at the start of this year, would I ever have stumbled upon ZenWalk? I doubt it.
