OpenSUSE update (also, just what is a distribution?)

So this weekend wasn’t quite as productive as I’d hoped in terms of my foray into testing and documentation for OpenSUSE. Between a wedding in New Hampshire and a shed that needed building (don’t believe the salespeople - an afternoon project this is not, especially when your best helper is a five-year old), I didn’t make much progress on that front.

Is Open Source Dying?

On the face of it, open-source software has been gaining ground of late. The much-anticipated draft of GNU GPLv3 (GNU General Public License Version 3) has been finally published, giving the open-source community an opportunity to finally get out of its own way.

A New Adventure! Windows Mobile and Ubuntu Linux

I've been aware of the existence of the Linux operating system for a long time, but I'd always assumed that it would be too complicated for me to learn and was a bit too geeky. Recently, however, I began hearing about a version of Linux called Ubuntu that was supposed to be pretty easy to use. Flash forward a few weeks and not only have I found that it is relatively easy to use, but it's already replaced Windows Vista as my main operating system of choice for day to day use!

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. -- When Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu founder and CEO of Canonical Ltd., spoke at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit at the Googleplex, he didn't talk about Ubuntu, patents, or hardware vendor partnerships. Ubuntu to get better dualview support

Deep within the pages of the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 alpha pages are various hints about what’s to expect from the upcoming releases. The Ubuntu team is working on integrating a better UI for multiple monitor support, and I personally am very thankful for it.

Zen Yourself Free: a Windows Defector Discovers ZenWalk

I have so much to thank Bill Gates for: introducing me to the baffling joys of consumer computing with Windows 95; teaching me the meaning of fear and dread with Windows 98; leading me to the sunlit uplands of Windows XP; getting me out of Microsoft altogether with the arrival of Vista. I hardly know where to start. And if I hadn't flown into a high-minded anti-Microsoft, down-with-Bill-Gates fury at the start of this year, would I ever have stumbled upon ZenWalk? I doubt it.

2 New Linux Resources

Linux is for Lovers

This is my blog. I'm a relatively new linux user, but as I figure things out I'd like for others to be able to benefit from those few things I do know.

TekTag.com
Not a blog, but a site where we are looking to collect tips and how-to's for open source, esp. Linux related. The site is based on social bookmarking, but we are adding features that will make it more of a tech support resource in the future. There is already a fair amount of Ubuntu content there.
