Monitor servers with Ubuntu and Zabbix
Zabbix is a nifty service monitoring application that also keeps a history of each machine, so it can be used for trend analysis as well as "normal" monitoring. It can be used to monitor just about anything, and uses a client agent for windows, linux, BSD, Solaris and others. I use it for an easy to use overview of how all the servers are keeping, and its useful to have a look at when users start moaning, because at a glance you can see what is happening. It can also send alerts based on a huge range of criteria, so you could know before the users even get a chance to moan. This installation is using an Ubuntu (6.0.6 Dapper) virtual machine to do the monitoring. Ive made a 2Gb HDD, and given it 64M of RAM, which should be enough.

Ubuntu vs. Freespire
First there was Lindows, the Linux that was going to be worth our cold, hard cash because it was going to run all our Windows apps. That idea didn't exactly pan out--and neither did the Lindows name. Then came Linspire, the latest version of which wasn't very inspiring at all.
But enough of what happened on previous seasons of the Linspire show. The new season began with a bang on August 9, when the Linspire folks released Freespire 1.0, a no-cost offering that seems a direct response to other freely distributed Linuxes such as Ubuntu, Red Hat's Fedora, and Novell's openSUSE. The Linspire people believe that Freespire is a cut above, for at least 15 different reasons. In my testing, I found Freespire to be the most compelling release yet from Linspire, but I also came away more appreciative of Ubuntu Linux than ever. For desktop users, Ubuntu has simply become the distribution to beat--and Freespire doesn't rise to the task.

General debug symbol packages available now
Introduction
------------
It took its time, but now I am proud to announce the first
implementation of the "Provide debug symbols for all packages"
specification [1].
A while ago I wrote the package 'pkg-create-dbgsym' which
automatically creates -dbgsym .ddebs (debug symbol debs) at package
build. This package has been installed in the edgy buildd chroots for
quite some time.
